Advancing a Veteran Suicide Loss Engagement Project

VetREC, in collaboration with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, proudly presents the Echoes of Valor project. This initiative, funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (2024), aims to address crucial mental health needs within the Veteran community.

First and foremost, this community engagement project focuses on understanding the patient-centered research needs of Veterans who have lost a battle buddy to suicide. By targeting postvention and mental health, we aim to develop effective support systems.

From the outset, VetREC co-leads every aspect of this project. Initially, we wrote the grant proposal. Following that, we worked with the funding agency. Then, we designed the project, and now, we will execute it alongside the research team.

More about the Project

Veterans in the Reserve/National Guard (R/NG) face high suicide risks. They often lack essential resources, making them one of the most underserved groups. Consequently, Echoes of Valor develops effective, Veteran-centric postvention services that reflect the true needs of Veterans.

This project will bring R/NG Veteran suicide loss survivors together in a virtual setting over the next year. Specifically, we aim to understand their Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) priorities. Furthermore, we will identify the specific postvention support they require.

Starting in September 2024, we will recruit 20 Reserve/National Guard Veterans. These Veterans will have experienced the loss of a battle buddy to suicide. Therefore, stay tuned for the application link. Join us in making a profound difference in the lives of our Veterans.

Together, we can honor their sacrifices. Additionally, we can ensure they receive the support they deserve.
